Honored Fort Hunt Sportsman, Harry Shackelford
Harry was born in North Carolina and graduated from The United States Naval Academy. He became a Naval Officer and Aviator, achieving the rank of Commander. He was part of an Anti-submarine squadron and later became a flight instructor where he developed his large repertoire of stories, all of which he was quick to share.
Harry brought his straight-shooting attitude with him to Northern Virginia and enjoyed a long, successful career with General Dynamics as a DoD contractor, where he retired as a Vice President.
But Harry’s private life is where he really hit his stride. Along with being a long-time board member and former President of the Fort Hunt Sportsmen’s Association, he was a member of St. Luke’s Church where he was an active participant, helped run their events and was famous for his North Carolina Style Bar-BQ. |
A father, friend, husband, Redskins fan and University of North Carolina fan, he was devoted to our local community. Harry helped raise thousands of dollars for local youth sports and never asked for anything in return. He was happy to do it….and did it with dignity and his down-home sense of humor. We miss Harry and we’re proud and pleased to have known him.
Harry’s widow, Karen McGinn was with Harry through his illness and we are thankful to her for taking such good care of him. |
