About UsThe Fort Hunt Sportsmen’s Association has a long tradition in the Alexandria/Fort Hunt area with 50+ years of support to local youth sports. The organization started out as a sports booster club to the old Fort Hunt High School in 1963 as well as support to non-school sports through the Fort Hunt Youth Athletic Association – established 4 years earlier, in 1959.
Along with sports equipment and uniforms, the club supported the school though the purchase and installation of the first stadium lights, communications equipment from the press box to the field, videotaping equipment, whirlpools, universal gyms and other features to improve the
sports teams that were very innovative for the day. All of the sports programs benefited and also helped the Fort Hunt High School Federals win many District Championships and become one of the best football teams in Northern Virginia for many years. |
Who We Are |
We’re a family organization and we’re proud of our multi-generational make-up. The Club has fun outings and monthly dinner meetings, but our mission is to provide for the local children – boys and girls sports programs. The Sportsmen’s organization is an all-volunteer group and runs on near-zero administrative costs.
The Fort Hunt Sportsmen have always represented the best that our local community has had to offer.
We are – and continue to be - the fundraisers, coaches, organizers, administrators and fans of local youth sports. Today, the Fort Hunt Sportsmen continue to support not only West Potomac High School Athletics and other programs and we continue to support the Fort Hunt Youth Athletic Association through the Baseball, Basketball, Football, Softball and Soccer programs. We’re proud of our past and we look forward to serving the community for many years to come.
Considering joining the club, or help support us through your donations or attending our events. Thank you. |
Our History |
In 1985, Fort Hunt High School was closed and West Potomac High School was formed with Fort Hunt’s students and the old Groveton High School students combined. There was some tension as neither school really wanted the schools to merge, but they eventually worked out their differences and unified. The Fort Hunt Sportsmen then diverted their attention from the old high school to the new high school and continue to do so right through today. With excellent coaching and the combined talents of two schools and two sports programs, West Potomac became a formidable football squad which won AAA State Championships in 1989 and 1990. In 2014, the Sportsmen provided considerable funding for the new turf field at West Potomac.
